This date in 1919 was a cold and snowy day on Long Island, in Oyster Bay, NY. In spite of the cold, an estimated 4,000 people stood outside Christ Episcopal Church during the funeral of the America’s 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt. Inside, some 500 invited friends and relatives crowded together for a simple liturgical service without music or eulogies.

Roosevelt had died in his sleep at his nearby home, Sagamore Hill, on January 6. He was buried in a family plot of his own selection, on a wooded hillside overlooking Long Island Sound.

Theodore Roosevelt filled his 60 years with adventure and service, some of which were spent in Dakota, near Medora—first as a sportsman hunter, and then as a landowner and rancher. Of that time he said, “…we felt the beat of hardy life in our veins, and ours was the glory of work and the joy of living.”
