"LEE SURRENDERS TO GRANT AT APPOMATOX COURT HOUSE IN VIRGINIA." These words, stamped across newspaper headlines around the nation in 1865, sealed the legacy of Union General Ulysses S. Grant.

The symbol of Union victory in the Civil War and 18th president of the United States seemingly has little to do with North Dakota. Yet a cursory glance at the southwest corner of a state map would quickly dispel any such claim. Sandwiched between Morton and Sioux counties lies Grant County. Created from the southern portion of Morton County at the 1916 November general election, Grant County was officially announced by Governor Louis B. Hanna on this day, November 24, 1916. Thus Grant County, North Dakota joined eleven other states in the Union to honor the former general and president with a county named Grant.
