Hear It Now is Prairie Public's discussion and phone-in program.
Hear It Now airs weekdays at 3 p.m. (CT) with a rebroadcast at
7 p.m. (CT), and focuses on issues, people and events important to this
region. That doesn't mean just regional issues -- all sorts of things
are important to people on the prairie. But the discussion -- whether
it's trade with China or health care -- take place from the viewpoint
of people who live here.
You may be surprised to learn that the phone-in format was pioneered
on public radio. When commercial radio took up the idea, it all too often
became a place for bombast and superficial analysis (though there are
certainly exceptions). In contrast, Hear It Now displays the same
qualities we all value in public radio information programming. Analysis
is in-depth. Rather than sensational confrontation, the program provides
reasoned discussion and an orientation toward solutions and understanding.
Not that it is dry and intellectual. There will certainly be some passion
and humor.
Listener participation is important to the show. "The public radio audience
is a wonderful group," said Bill Thomas, director of radio for Prairie
Public. "Every time I meet listeners, or look at the correspondence I
receive, I am impressed by the preponderance of people who are intelligent
and constructively engaged with their communities and the world. Listener
calls truly add to our discussions on Hear It Now."
But calling in is not the only way to participate. We want your suggestions
for topics and guests. "We need people who would like to write and deliver
commentaries," Thomas says. "We will be very grateful if listeners take
some time to think about these things and let us know what they come up
with." You can e-mail Hear It Now at hearitnow (at) prairiepublic
