We often hear stories of the arduous journey and the struggle to obtain a homestead, but that wasn’t always the case. On this date in 1892, the tale is told of a young lady from Sweden who arrived in Bismarck on the train. She proceeded to the office of the Clerk of Court and filed her Declaration of Intention. She then went to the Land Office and filed a homestead claim. But her day was just beginning. With her sweetheart in hand she went to the County Judge and took out a marriage license and, securing the services of a minister, she became a bride … a new land, a new home and a new life, all in one day.
