Maui in May

May is a great time to visit Maui in Hawaii!  I was there just a few weeks ago.  It helps bridge a late spring into summer, getting a head start on your tan!  And prices can be better then, too, than mid-winter.

At the beginning of May, you can celebrate the Maui Onion Festival in Kaanapali.  Celebrity chefs offer cooking demos, special dinners and onion-eating contests.  I have to say, that in dining out at several fine restaurants in Maui, I have never tasted better onions! Some of the activities take place right next to the Westin Maui Resort and Spa, at Whalers Village.

Other May observances on the island include a Celebration of the Arts, Maui Brewers Festival, Chinese Kite Fest, and a Maui Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival.

Maui boasts incredible natural beauty.   Take a drive on the Hana Highway, driving yourself or take a tour. It’s a windey and scenic journey, with ocean views and waterfalls, the most spectacular of which is the 400-foot Waimoku Falls. Don’t miss a stop at the Keanae  (kee-nay) Arboretum.

Visit Haleakala (ha li a kah lah) National Park , site of a volcanic crater more than 1 million years old.  The tallest peak of Haleakala (ha li a kah lah), which means House of the Sun, is more than 10,000 feet tall. Hiking is popular in the Park.

For those who enjoy deep sea fishing, you have a great opportunity in Maui.

Spend some time in Lahaina, a historic whaling town.  This charming town is packed with restaurants, art galleries and unique shops.   Enjoy breakfast on the waterfront – one fine option is Koa’s Seaside Grille.

Other fine dining to consider is Merriman’s Hawaii Restaurant in Kapalua.  This fine dining establishment is oceanfront with a rocky point.  Sit on the patio as the sun goes down and watch the paddle boarders.

Another excellent choice near the Westin is Roy’s, overlooking a golf course.  Don’t miss Mama’s Fish House, a 30-minute drive from Lahaina.  All three of these dining spots highlight fabulous fresh seafood.  At Mama’s, the daily menu will even tell you who caught your fish!

We stayed at the Westin, enjoying several pools and dining venues.  Ocean front rooms with balconies are worth the extra investment.  It is delightful to look out over the ocean and watch the sunset!

A travel package to the Westin  from Bismarck including air and hotel for one week  in May 2015 is estimated at $2250 per person, double occupancy.

If you have a family grouping, you may wish to consider the neighboring Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. They have very attractive condo-style accommodations which house several people or can be extended with adjoining rooms.

Or consider staying at the Outrigger.  Flying from Fargo, a moderate room  and air for one week in May, 2015, runs $1933 per person double occupancy.

Whether it is soaking up the sun, fishing or eating fish, shopping, touring historical or natural sites, or just plain relaxing, Maui is a beautiful and rich setting for a terrific warm weather vacation!
