The TL Donat Legacy Circle

Funding the Future

Charitable Remainder Trust

In a charitable remainder trust, the donor transfers cash or assets to a trust that provides regular, fixed income to the donor and, optionally, spouse or other beneficiary for their lives or for a set period of years. At the end of that time, proceeds of the trust go to non-profit organizations you select, such as Prairie Public Broadcasting.

You receive a tax deduction for part of the gift you make to fund the trust. And if you fund the trust with appreciated assets, you avoid capital gains.

This is one of the most attractive aspects of a charitable remainder trust. It provides an opportunity for those with appreciated assets, who would see their investments significantly eroded by taxes were they to convert them to cash, to increase their life income without tax penalty, and to receive a significant tax deduction as well. Income can be variable (unitrust) or fixed (annuity trust).
