The Bell Creek Story – CO2 in Action

Premieres on June 21st at 7:00 pm CT

Boom and bust; it’s the story of the frontier. For southeastern Montana, boom times came with cattle in the 1880s and with oil in the 1960s. Now, carbon dioxide from human activities is bringing the Bell Creek oil field back to life.

What began as a typical frontier oil production story has become an example of technical innovation with a smaller carbon footprint. The Bell Creek Field is producing greener oil than conventional fields while serving as a real-world laboratory to evaluate techniques needed to make carbon capture and storage a practical strategy to eliminate CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.

The Bell Creek Story–CO2 in Action is a production of Prairie Public Broadcasting, Fargo, North Dakota, in collaboration with the Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership, led by the University of North Dakota’s Energy & Environmental Research Center. The PCOR Partnership represents a wide variety of public and private sector partners located in nine states and four Canadian provinces in the heartland of North America. It is one of seven regional partnerships that make up the Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships Initiative managed within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and implemented through the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). Funding is provided by NETL, the PCOR Partnership members, and the members of Prairie Public. To learn more about the role of geologic sequestration in carbon management, including CO2 sequestration projects, and to learn about the other documentaries in this series, visit the PCOR Partnership Web site at www.undeerc.org/PCOR.
