Closing Thoughts On India

A blog update from producer Bob Dambach
June 4th 2009

George Bernard Shaw was credited with saying “England and America are two countries separated by the same language.”

This was true of many of our attempts at communication during our visit to India. Often a native and I were both speaking English but there was little communication going on. Thank God for Poonam and her ability to speak Hindi. Without her language ability I think we’d still be riding around in a circle around the India Arch. We had much better luck speaking with both of our families. I think we each understood over 90% of what each other were saying. Overall a smile and a bob of the head went a long way.

We enjoyed our visit to India. We saw many wonderful things and met friendly, welcoming people. However, some of the conditions we saw in Delhi were hard to experience. I think it is difficult for Americans to grasp the intricacies of a culture that has one foot in the 21st century and the other foot in 6,000 years of a rich multicultural history.

Some Snapshots:

The day we left was Barb’s birthday and her family arranged for her to be welcomed in her hotel room by a chocolate cake.

It is probably not a wise idea for 4 people to ride as passengers in an auto rickshaw. Especially if Bob has to ride in front!

Poonam, her sister Jo and her Mom did a great job in finding our two families.

We sampled the food. Mild was still a little too hot for me! Poonam and Barb had stronger stomachs.
