A Glossary of Quilting Terms

Appliqué

Technique of stitching one piece of fabric down on top of another

Piecing

Technique of joining two pieces of fabric edge to edge

Quilt

A fiber sandwich, consisting of top and bottom fabrics with a layer of batting between, all joined by stitches

Top

The upper fabric layer, usually pieced or appliquéd

Batting

Loose fibers, usually cotton or wool, which add warmth and padding between the fabric layers

Quilting

A line of running stitches which joins the three layers of the fiber sandwich

Whole cloth

A quilt made with a top and bottom of fabric without piecing or appliqué
